Round Table has always been more than just a social club, it’s a movement that leaves an indelible mark on its members, their families, and the communities it serves. For decades, the organization has fostered camaraderie, driven impactful community projects, and created enduring friendships.
This blog post explores a heartfelt reflection from our National President, Steve Eccles, offering a firsthand account of Round Table's lasting influence. With a candid mix of optimism and determination, it delves into the resurgence of membership and the rechartering of clubs across the UK and Ireland, underscoring the associations' ability to evolve and thrive in modern times.

"This year, I’ve spoken extensively about the incredible impact and ongoing relevance of Round Table Great Britain and Ireland and that of the wider Round Table Family. Indeed, when I attend a club's charter I always reflect on the positive impact that the Table has made over it’s 50, 60 or 70+ years. Friendships formed, community impact, fundraising… and more.
"However, I have also talked about my sadness, that in my time in Table, I had witnessed a steady decline in membership numbers and groups continuing to close, and without those Tables the positive impact they made has been lost.
"But now, and for those that have followed the progression of Round Table over the past 18 months, you will have seen that we have turned a corner. A huge team effort, direct engagement with members, and a slight change of focus have led to RT GB&I now enjoying its second year of sustained growth after years of decline.
"In fact, as I write this, we have just chartered our seventh new Round Table of the year, with the recharter of Belfast Round Table. So not only are we seeing membership growth but also new Tables are starting to form or reform. My hope is that with the ongoing consistency of supporting our members and clubs, we can see a resurgence of Round Table and demonstrate the importance, impact, and relevance of the Round Table Family in modern society…. The future is bright!"
But the Round Table Family has a much wider Impact
The true impact of Round Table extends far beyond membership numbers or fundraising milestones. Through personal anecdotes about sleigh collections and family involvement, the story shines a light on how the association’s values are being instilled in the next generation. Steve continues:
"All of that being said, when we talk about impact, it’s not just about the difference we make in our communities or the camaraderie among members—it’s about something much deeper. It’s about how Table positively influences our families, friends, and the next generation.
"For me, Round Table has been a transformative experience. It’s enriched my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined when I first found it. That positivity has spilled over into my family. My daughters, Grace (10) and Abigail (7), are a shining example of this.
"One of my favourite things within RTBI is the sleigh season, with Round Tables running approximately 150 across the UK and Ireland. Whilst helping with the Christmas sleigh collection alongside Great Dunmow Round Table, I was reminded of just how much Table has shaped my family’s life. Grace and Abi have grown up around it, and their enthusiasm for coming along and helping ‘dad’ is inspiring. Whether they’re handing out chocolates (and eating their fair share!) or helping with collections, they’re creating memories that will stay with them forever.
"More importantly, they’re learning the values that Round Table embodies—kindness, generosity, and a commitment to community. These values are woven into the very fabric of what it means to be a part of this incredible association, and it’s heartwarming to see them being passed on to the next generation."
Inspiring the next generation
As Round Table embarks on a promising new chapter, Steve's reflections serve as a rallying cry for members to safeguard its legacy and ensure its relevance for years to come.
Steve believes "that experiences like these are essential for our children. By involving them in Round Table activities, we’re not just making memories; we’re instilling the right values to guide them as they grow. With any luck, these moments will inspire them—and others in their generation—to take up the mantle and become the next wave of Tablers and Circlers.
"But for this to happen, we need to ensure that Round Table continues to thrive. It’s up to us to safeguard this amazing association for the future. We must fight to preserve its legacy, its values, and its ability to make a difference—not just for us, but for those who come after us.
And I realise that this is a huge part of my motivation to ensure that Round Table continues to grow.
"As we move forward, let’s ensure that Round Table remains a beacon of positivity for generations to come. Together, we can make sure that this incredible association continues to enrich lives—both in our communities and in our own homes.
Let’s keep fighting for Table, for our families, and for the future. Together, we can make it happen."
Steve's story is a testament to the profound and far-reaching impact of Round Table—not just in the communities we serve, but within our own families and the lives of future generations. It highlights the values Round Table hold dear and the legacy you are all building together.
Now, more than ever, it’s up to Tablers to ensure that Round Table continues to thrive. Whether you’re a long-time member, a new recruit, or someone inspired by our mission, your contribution matters.
