Making friends, less easy in your 30s?

Updated: Aug 21

Remember those carefree days of making friends in school or college? Yeah, life gets a little busier in your 30s. Between work, family, and other commitments, finding time to connect with new people can feel impossible. But what if there was a way to make friends as an adult, all while having fun and trying new things?

We thought we’d take a chance to tell the story of one of our newest members Mathew. He tells us: “I moved from Solihull to Sheringham 12 years ago, knowing no one but my other half. Just when I started making some friends at work, the pandemic hit. Suddenly, I went from seeing people every day in the office to working alone at a makeshift desk in our spare room. Then, life gave me one of its greatest gifts: the birth of my son. But as joyful as that was, it also came with its own set of mental challenges, and I won’t lie – those close to me know I felt a bit low for some time. After seeing my struggles, my wife finally took action and reached out to our local Round Table Great Britain and Ireland. And I couldn’t be more thankful that she did.”

Mathew opened up about his experiences with Round Table after attending National Sporting Weekend where he was inducted as a member of his local Table Sheringham and Cromer.

“The members of the Sheringham and Cromer Round Table have been nothing short of amazing. Inclusive, friendly, outgoing, and just all-around great fun. I couldn’t have joined at a better time. After attending just four meetings, I had the opportunity to take part in the Round Table’s National Sports Weekend, this year hosted right here in Norwich.”

NSW, as it’s known by most Tablers, in August this year was attended by a record number of first-timers. With so many guys in Mathew's shoes experiencing it all for the first time, it was great to hear how much everyone enjoyed themselves. For those that missed out here’s Mathew’s version of events: “What a weekend! From seven-a-side football and tennis to sports like lacrosse, golf, basketball, and even dodgeball and ultimate frisbee – the whole day was fantastic. I brought home a bronze and silver medal in football and baseball and then finished the weekend by doing my induction alongside eight other new recruits on stage in front of 280 fellow Tablers. It was a moment I’ll never forget.”

So if you are thinking how do I make friends, especially if like Mathew you have recently relocated, why not reach out to your local Round Table to see what friendships you can make? You can search for your nearest club on our interactive map here:

Mathew had these last few words to say, perhaps you can relate?

“If no one had told me about Round Table, none of this would have happened, and Saturday night I'd likely have been sitting at home in my slippers watching another Netflix film. There’s nothing wrong with that – but if, like me, you have a desire to get out there, meet new people, and experience more, I can’t recommend Round Table highly enough.”

Regular events, sports weekends, and local activities create opportunities to bond with like-minded guys. So, what are you waiting for reach out to the team via our contact form and we’ll happily introduce to your closest Table!

Whether you've recently moved to a new town or simply looking to expand your social circle, Round Table provides a welcoming environment where you can connect with like-minded guys.

Thanks to Mathew for sharing his story with us!
